A couple of months ago I had to write an essay for school about technology and how it affected certain groups of people. Well, being the mommy that I am I chose to write about how technology affects children. If I get to choose the topic on an essay, I will always choose something that I can learn from. So that’s exactly what this essay did. It taught me about how my children are being affected on a daily basis.
Now, let me start by saying that there are definitely both positives and negatives. But I did find that there were more negatives and that’s probably why doctors recommend no tv before the age of 2. I wish I could say that we follow the rules but come on we are on our way to baby number three and it’s just hard to follow rules these days.
It can be really hard to limit technology use. Our kids are constantly watching us and we are on our phones or other devices most of the day. Hailey always asks me if I have my phone with me before we walk out the door. Not because she wants to make sure we can contact other people, but because she knows that I always have it on me. Unfortunately, it’s the world that our children are growing up in. When I was younger, my mother never had a cell phone and technology was one of those things that only people with money really worried about.
Well, our world has certainly changed and now it’s our turn to raise these little ones. So what exactly should we be worried about when it comes to technology?
That answer will vary from family to family.
In our family, it’s all about moderation. Our kids will watch TV or play games on our phones all day long if we let them. Some shows and games can be very educational but there are also things out there that just aren’t very helpful. With letting them use technology all day, they lose their social skills and forget how to interact in the real world. That’s why we try to supervise and set limits.
We also have to take into consideration that every child learns in a different way. Some succeed when learning from a show or using a computer to help them complete their work. Those children may need some more screen time because they benefit from it.
Some of the negative aspects of technology is that children lose interaction, they spend less time being active, and they see the world differently because they lose out on actual experiences.
One of the biggest positives when it comes to technology and our children is that they will be able to succeed in the future because technology is consistently changing. Our future will continue to revolve around technological advances and our children need to remain proactive.
Overall, there is no right way to raise your children when it comes to the use of technology. I think each parent knows and understands their child and makes decisions based on their individual circumstances and needs.
Ultimately, we are the ones who set the example for our kids. If we use technology all day, they will want to as well. Now, I’m not saying the doctors are wrong in what they suggest. They are just simply making a suggestion. Just like they suggest we get our kids vaccinated and when they recommend starting sold foods. It’s all just a template on how we should be raising our children but each child will grow and be different from their siblings, cousins, and classmates. Therefore, we make the final call in how our children will be raised.
