As Ryan’s wife I will always want the absolute best for him. I want him to succeed in life as a parent, husband, brother, and friend. Most importantly, I want him to be as healthy as possible so that we could continue this thing called life, with our three beautiful babies.
But there is so much that I cannot control. I cannot control his smoking addiction, and that has been hard.
I have tried it all. I have yelled at him, cried out to him, and even tried making him feel guilty about his actions. I have hid his cigarettes. I had even taken all the lighters out of the house at one point, but nothing was working. What I failed to do throughout this time was show him love. He needed my SUPPORT and I kept pushing him away. I remember him saying a few months ago, “I will quit when I’m ready.” That was hard to swallow but I decided to accept it. I was feeling defeated, but I knew that he wasn’t going to quit until he decided that it was something that he wanted to do for HIMSELF.
And that my friends is exactly what happened.
Ryan had just gotten home from work. He took off his shoes, changed out of his work clothes, and sat on the couch to gather his thoughts that evening. He looked over to me and said, “Babe, I realized something today. I really want to quit smoking.” Since our oldest was born, Ryan always said he was going to quit but he never told me why, and this time he did. He continued, “Well, you know how I go out to smoke during work, right? I have gone out to the same spot for the past 3 years and I’ve been noticing something. I put out my cigarette on the ground every day and I can see what it’s doing to the ground. It’s gross and I can only imagine what it’s doing to my body.” That day was the turning point for Ryan. He wanted to change his life. I realized then that it’s true what people have always told to me. That I cannot make him quit and he will quit when he’s ready. Ryan was finally ready to let go of his addiction and I was ready to support him throughout this journey.
Let’s face it, it can be hard to quit smoking and we knew he was going to need help. We went to our local CVS Pharmacy to see if there was something that could help him overcome his addiction. We decided to try the NicoDerm® CQ® Patch. After reading the instructions and benefits of the patch, we came to the conclusion that it was the best choice for his lifestyle. If you’re not sure which form of nicotine replacement therapy is right for you, your local CVS pharmacist or MinuteClinic nurse practitioner can offer expert advice and develop a personalized plan with you.
NicoDerm® CQ® Patch has Extended Release SmartControl® Technology that delivers Nicotine into your body throughout the day, up to 24 hours. Therefore, it fights the urge of wanting to light a cigarette. It was easy for Ryan to use because it requires one application every 24 hours. There are also 3 steps to his treatment which allows him to step down the amount of nicotine over the course of the treatment. Are you ready to be smoke free? Here are the directions for using NicoDerm CQ, which can be found on the website:
- Step 1 (Weeks 1 to 6) – Use one 21-mg patch/day
- Step 2 (Weeks 7 to 8) – Use one 14-mg patch/day
- Step 3 (Weeks 9 to 10) – Use one 7-mg patch/day
If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day, start with Step 1 (21 mg) for 6 weeks, then Step 2 (14 mg) for 2 weeks, then Step 3 (7 mg) for 2 weeks and then stop.
If you smoke 10 or fewer cigarettes per day, do not use Step 1 (21 mg). Start with Step 2 (14 mg) for 6 weeks, then Step 3 (7 mg) for 2 weeks, and then stop.
To improve your chances of quitting, complete the full treatment program. Apply a new patch every day.
Let me show you how easy it is to use NicoDerm® CQ® Patch:
Begin by choosing a clean, hairless, and dry surface on your skin. Usually, the arm is the easiest to start with but you are able to choose another place if you’d like.
Next, open one pouch and remove the patch. You can save the pouch so that you can dispose of the patch after you’ve used it for the day. The patch will have a liner that you can peel off. Slowly peel off the liner from the middle and put the sticky side onto your skin. When placing the patch on your skin, try holding it by the edge so that you touch the sticky side as little as possible.
And just like that you can start the journey to a better YOU!
