It’s no secret that I am a huge #fangirl, and with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 available on Blu-ray/DVD, my kids INSIST on geeking out! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the in-home release than some AMAZING Gamora Inspired Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting! My friend June over at Sugar Momma’s Gourmet Cupcakery whipped up these tasty treats and shared the recipe so we can make them too!
I love the finishing touches on these cupcakes – the black cupcake wrapper and golden sprinkles resemble Gamora’s outfit, while the hot pink and purple buttercream with edible glitter represents her hair. That dark red velvet cake is sinfully delicious too! Every detail is taken into account with these cupcakes, right down to Gamora’s striking green-hughed skin.
Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and characters from the classic comics come to their aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.

Dark Red Velvet Cake Recipe
What you need:
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
- 1 cups water
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp. + 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 oz. red food dye
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and put liners in cupcake pan, set aside.
In a small saucepan on medium heat, cook butter, water, and oil until melted together. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a separate bowl, stir together sugar, cocoa powder, and flour. Incorporate the butter mixture with a whisk until completely smooth. Then, whisk in the eggs one at a time, and then add the buttermilk. Finally, whisk in the baking soda, salt, and vanilla.
Fill cupcakes 3/4 full and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick is inserted and comes out almost clean.
Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting Recipe
What you need:
- 1 Block (8 oz) Cream Cheese
- 1 lb. Unsalted Butter
- 1 lb. Powdered Sugar
- 1 tsp. Himalayan Salt
- 2 tsp. Pure Vanilla
On medium speed, with paddle in mixer, beat cream cheese, butter and salt (and coloring, if using) for 5 minutes. (YES, 5 full minutes, this is the key to fluffy buttercream!) Reduce speed to slow and add powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time, adding vanilla about half way through, until all powdered sugar is fully incorporated; increase speed to medium-high and beat for an additional 5 minutes.
