When we were pregnant with Hailey, we honestly didn’t know we had so many options for diapering. All we knew is that we wanted the best for our little girl.
I was active duty at the time and I had a dear friend who was obsessed with cloth diapering. Of course I got curious and wanted some more information. She gave me a book titled Changing Diapers by Kelly Wels (Highly recommend it if you want to cloth diaper). I read the book and was in love with all the different options. Unfortunately, Ryan wasn’t completely sold on the idea of cloth diapering. I didn’t blame him because this was still very knew to us. All around, many had negative comments and thought it was a terrible idea. Even though we weren’t sure how it was gonna turn out, we went ahead and purchased the cloth diapers.
A couple months down the road it was almost time for Hailey’s arrival and we had quite a few baby showers, because our families and friends were in different states. Of course many gave us disposable diapers. Which we were so thankful for and they didn’t go to waste.
Today, we use both disposables and cloth. Throughout the years we have just figured out what works for our family. Fortunately, our kids aren’t picky with what goes on their bottoms either. So here’s a look at how we diaper and why.
We use cloth about 90% of the time. We purchased 24 Bumgenius Freetime All-In-One cloth diapers. We have not had to purchase anymore AIO’s because Hailey was potty trained when Kenny made his appearance
With Hailey we used disposable diapers for about 2-3 months and then switched over to cloth. With Kenny we used prefolds and covers for the first couple of months and then switched over to the AIO’s. Why? Well, the AIO’s are meant to fit a baby from birth until they are potty trained but we just found them to be too bulky for a newborn. We found that prefolds and covers are just perfect for the newborn stage and super economical. For baby #3 we will be using the same diapering method that we used with Kenny. Except now we will have two in diapers and we will have to purchase a few more.
So, when do we use disposables?
Whenever we become lazy on our cloth diapers. For instance, if I forget to do the laundry and we are on our last diaper, I will go and buy a few disposables for the meantime. Also, when we travel. I took the cloth diapers the first time I went to NY with Hailey and it was just a hassle and unnecessary luggage.
Another big reason we use disposables is because we don’t expect others to enjoy using cloth like we do. Let’s face it, it’s definitely more work and not made for those with sensitive stomachs. And that’s okay! A couple of weeks ago, Ryan and I went on a baby moon to Texas. Our sweet friends were watching our little ones and you better believe that I left them with disposables. They are just so much easier to deal with.
So yes, it is possible to cloth diaper and still use disposables. Just because we use one doesn’t mean we can’t use the other. We love having so many options and exploring this stage of life with our little ones.
